Pacific herring is a significant part of Nuu-chah-nulth culture, food security, and trade. Like all small pelagic species, Pacific herring exhibit highly variable abundance that can often be accommodated by robust and responsive management.

Pacific Herring sustainability is complex, and reaches beyond biomass-based objectives to include ecological, cultural, and economic dimensions of herring populations and fisheries. Landmark Fisheries Research has worked with Fisheries and Oceans Canada for the past 7 years to develop a suite of tools, analytical frameworks, and tactical analyses that integrate a broad range of objectives and interests for each of the 5 main Herring management areas in BC.

The Atlantic Halibut fishery is characterized by a shared commitment to biological and economic sustainability by both DFO and the Atlantic Halibut Council. The fishery was first certified by the Marine Stewardship Council in 2013, and has continued to promote ongoing sustainability since then. Landmark Fisheries Research has been a key partner since 2014 in designing a sustainable harvest strategy aimed at the continued success of this critical Atlantic fishery.
